WEEK 3 — WARNO
RECONNAISSANCE IN FORCE
Date:
26 SEP 26
Time:
0845
Weather:
Clear
Situation:
Following successful operations against insurgent weapons distribution networks, the 17th Ranger Battalion has obtained intelligence indicating that hostile forces maintain significant control over transportation corridors and mountainous terrain within AO APACHE.
Intelligence recovered during previous operations, including the capture of Rahmat Khan Zadran, alias “Shepherd,” has identified an organized network responsible for controlling the movement of weapons, personnel, and supplies throughout the region.
The designated operational area is known enemy-controlled territory. Hostile forces actively patrol the region, maintain established defensive positions, and exercise control over key roads and mountain approaches.
S2 assesses that Wali Mohammad Khattak, alias “Gatekeeper,” plays a significant role in coordinating movement and security throughout this network.
Additionally, intelligence recovered from an IED and FPV-drone production facility has identified an individual known as “Engineer,” believed responsible for coordinating the production and employment of improvised explosive devices and modified unmanned aircraft.
The 17th Ranger Battalion will conduct a deliberate reconnaissance-in-force operation into the enemy-controlled mountain corridor to challenge hostile control and provoke a significant enemy response.
The intent is to force hostile elements to react to the Battalion's presence, potentially exposing the locations, movements, communications, or command elements associated with Gatekeeper and Engineer.
Enemy Forces:
OPFOR:
Enemy forces operating within the designated AO consist primarily of organized insurgent elements associated with the Northern Lythium Shura (NLS).
The area is under established hostile control, with enemy personnel conducting regular patrols, maintaining defensive positions, and monitoring key transportation routes.
Enemy forces are expected to possess small arms, machine guns, RPGs, technicals, soviet era APCs and limited indirect-fire capabilities.
Hostile elements may employ prepared fighting positions, observation posts, roadblocks, and mobile patrols to restrict friendly movement.
IED THREAT — IMMINENT
Intelligence indicates a significant threat from improvised explosive devices throughout the operational area. Enemy forces are assessed to possess the capability to employ roadside IEDs, command-detonated devices, and other explosive hazards against mounted formations.
The possibility of FPV-drone attacks against friendly vehicles and personnel must also be considered.
Enemy forces may attempt to delay the Battalion's advance, isolate individual vehicles, and reinforce threatened positions.
A coordinated enemy response is anticipated as friendly forces advance deeper into hostile-controlled territory.
The exact strength and disposition of enemy forces remain unknown.
Friendly Forces:
BLUFOR:
17th Ranger Battalion will conduct the operation utilizing Stryker-mounted ground elements.
Battalion forces will be responsible for advancing through the designated operational corridor, engaging hostile forces, securing assigned objectives, and conducting battlefield exploitation.
Stryker elements will provide protected mobility, direct-fire support, and transportation for dismounted Ranger elements throughout the operation.
Supporting reconnaissance, aviation, medical, and other assets will be available in accordance with the mission commander's plan.
Civilian Considerations:
The civilian population within the operational area is assessed to be predominantly sympathetic or loyal to hostile forces.
Local residents may provide enemy elements with information regarding coalition movements, troop strength, vehicle activity, and friendly positions.
Civilians may also support hostile operations through transportation, logistics, communications, or the concealment of personnel and equipment.
CIVILIAN INTELLIGENCE COLLECTION:
Where the opportunity presents itself, Ranger elements are encouraged to identify and question individuals suspected of providing material support, intelligence, or logistical assistance to hostile forces.
Individuals for whom credible evidence establishes involvement in hostile activities may be detained in accordance with applicable rules of engagement and detention procedures for follow-on questioning by intelligence personnel.
Civilian presence, residency within enemy-controlled territory, or suspected political loyalty alone does not constitute grounds for detention.
Positive identification remains essential. Commanders will maintain control of fires and minimize unnecessary damage to civilian infrastructure.
All detainees will be documented, safeguarded, and transferred to the appropriate personnel for further exploitation.
Mission:
17th Ranger Battalion conducts a Stryker-mounted reconnaissance-in-force operation through known enemy-controlled territory, advancing along OBJ A → OBJ B → OBJ C, in order to challenge hostile control of the mountain corridor, engage and disrupt enemy forces, and deliberately provoke a response intended to expose or draw out individuals known as “Gatekeeper” and “Engineer.”
The operation will seek to identify enemy command elements, defensive capabilities, and logistical infrastructure while recovering actionable intelligence for subsequent operations.
Execution:
At 0845 on 26 SEP 26, 17th Ranger Battalion elements will initiate mounted movement into the designated operational area utilizing Stryker vehicles.
The Battalion will advance along the established OBJ A → OBJ B → OBJ C route, conducting reconnaissance-in-force against hostile positions encountered throughout the corridor.
Friendly forces should anticipate enemy observation, prepared defensive positions, and potential attacks against the advancing column.
IED activity is assessed as an imminent threat. Commanders must account for explosive hazards throughout the movement corridor and maintain awareness of potential FPV-drone activity.
As enemy forces respond to the Battalion's advance, friendly elements will engage and disrupt hostile resistance while continuing movement toward designated objectives.
OBJ A — Initial Objective
Establish a foothold within the enemy-controlled corridor, challenge hostile presence, and assess the enemy's initial response to friendly movement.
OBJ B — Intermediate Objective
Continue the advance, engage organized enemy resistance, and disrupt hostile forces attempting to prevent Battalion movement through the operational area.
OBJ C — Final Objective
Advance into the final designated objective area, disrupt remaining hostile positions, and exploit enemy facilities, personnel, and equipment for intelligence.
Throughout the operation, particular attention will be given to identifying communications, movements, or activities associated with Gatekeeper and Engineer.
Following the seizure of designated objectives, Ranger elements will conduct Sensitive Site Exploitation (SSE) where tactically feasible.
Priority intelligence collection includes:
-
Enemy command-and-control communications.
-
Information identifying Gatekeeper's location, movements, or subordinate commanders.
-
Evidence of Engineer's involvement in IED and FPV-drone operations.
-
Maps identifying enemy-controlled routes, defensive positions, and logistical facilities.
-
Communications devices, documents, and records linking hostile elements to larger insurgent networks.
-
Information identifying additional targets of opportunity.
-
Questioning and lawful detention of individuals credibly suspected of supporting hostile operations for follow-on intelligence exploitation.
Following completion of assigned objectives, the Battalion will consolidate, account for personnel and equipment, and prepare for extraction or follow-on tasking as directed.
The primary purpose of this operation is to force an enemy response and develop actionable intelligence. The capture or elimination of Gatekeeper is not a required objective during this operation.
