OPERATION ENDURING SPEAR — WEEK 1 & 1.5 SUMMARY

 SUMMARY

The opening operations of Operation Enduring Spear focused on Mohammad “Musa” Ahmadi, a local weapons facilitator operating near Kunara in AO RANGER. RRC reconnaissance developed Musa's compound for a 17th Ranger Battalion direct-action raid. Although Musa escaped during the initial assault, SSE of the Kunara compound recovered payment and weapons records, communications, and an annotated map showing an established network of safe, alternate, and high-risk smuggling routes used to move weapons and supplies while avoiding Coalition-controlled areas. Most importantly, the recovered material repeatedly referenced an individual known only as “Rahmat,” indicating Musa was only one part of a larger weapons-distribution network.

Following Musa's escape, ANP reporting—confirmed by an ODA team—located him in Mafaraz, prompting an immediate RRC capture-or-kill operation that successfully resolved Musa's status. SSE at the Mafaraz location recovered additional route information, a panicked conversation between Musa and Rahmat following the Kunara raid, and evidence of a nearby weapons cache containing four Stinger missile systems awaiting movement. The recovered intelligence further strengthened the connection between Musa and Rahmat, eventually allowing S2 to identify Rahmat Khan Zadran, alias “Shepherd,” a weapons smuggler operating primarily in AO APACHE. With Musa dealt with, the Battalion's investigation now shifts toward Rahmat and the larger weapons network operating behind him.
