Opord

Situation

Cut CSAT’s sea bridge. Breach western trench belts. Destroy OBJ POKER (Route Jason / Route Chucky). Alpha Co leads assault. 74th SFG provides screen/QRF. Echo Co provides mechanized / Stryker (SHORAD) support. Maximum force authorized.

Area of Operation (AO):

Virolahti AO

Forces in Play:

Opfor:

  • Vympel 322 (CSAT-backed): light/moderate infantry, technicals, MG/ZU emplacements, trench defenders.
  • High IED threat on approach routes and within trench belts.
  • Residual CSAT EW (GPS/radar jamming), intermittent rotary-wing support, and maritime escorts.
  • Key dispositions: OBJ POKER (Route Jason / Route Chucky), western trench belts, coastal offload points.

Blufor:

  • Alpha Company (74th SFG detachment): Primary assault / HVT clearing
  • 17th Ranger Battalion (Bn HQ): Command, breach/clear coordination, detainee handling
  • 74th SFG: Screen, QRF, recon, precision direct-action
  • Echo Company: Vehicle/logistics lift, Stryker (SHORAD) air defense, mechanized support
  • Engineers / EOD / SIGINT-ELINT / UAV ISR / Coastal SOF — enabling elements

Civilian Considerations:

  • Civilians present along approach corridors and near offload points. Local trust in NATO is low. Minimize unnecessary civilian engagement but mission completion takes priority.

Engagement Criteria:

{Most likely Cause of Action}

{Most Deadly Course of Action}

Mission:

Deny CSAT maritime resupply, breach and clear western trench belts, and seize/destroy Vympel 322 storage at OBJ POKER. Secondary: detain and extract all military-aged males for processing and intelligence exploitation.
Alpha Company is primary assault; 74th SFG provides screen/QRF; Echo Company provides mechanized / Stryker (SHORAD) support.

Execution:

Concept of Operations (Phased)
Phase 1 — Anti-Air Interdiction (Ylä Pihlaja Ring)
  • Goal: Deny the air corridor from sea to inland nodes; interdict CSAT helicopter runs.
  • Tasks: 74th SFG recon & mark AA nodes; Alpha Co secures emplacement areas; Echo Co Stryker (SHORAD) provides local AD cover. Emplacements temporary and relocatable. SEAD/overwatch as available.
Retrograde / Refit
Upon Phase 1 completion, all assault elements retrograde to FOB Whiteclaw for rearm/refit, vehicle checks, and engineer/EOD recalibration prior to Phase 2.

Phase 2 — Western Trench Breach & Clearance

  • Goal: Breach, clear, and neutralize trench belts screening OBJ POKER.
  • Tasks: Alpha Co conducts main-breach with engineer/EOD; 74th SFG provides flank interdiction & QRF; Echo Co mechanized elements exploit breaches and secure lanes. UAV ISR & SIGINT provide overwatch and updated targeting.
Post-Phase 2 Resupply
Logistics helicopters deliver full infantry and vehicle resupply to prearranged staging LZs near OBJ POKER once trench belts are cleared.

Phase 3 — Assault & Denial of OBJ POKER

  • Goal: Seize/destroy storage nodes at Route Jason / Route Chucky; deny materiel to insurgents.
  • Tasks: Alpha Co leads inner-perimeter assault/clear; 74th SFG conducts HVT interdiction and secures exfil lanes; Echo Co secures outer approaches and moves detainees/materiel. Engineers/EOD render/destroy materiel and document for exploitation. Detain and extract military-aged males for processing.

Objectives:

  • Sequence phases to limit enemy maneuver and civilian exposure.
  • Continuous SIGINT/ELINT and ISR monitoring for EW, maritime, and air activity.
  • Maintain Unit Net coordination and unit comm discipline.

KEY TASKS BY UNIT (Checklist)

  • Alpha Company (Primary Assault)
    • Secure Phase 1 emplacement sectors on order.

    • Lead Phase 2 breach and clear entrenchments / inner compounds.

    • Lead Phase 3 inner-perimeter assault and demolition tasks.

    • Ensure evidence/documentation of captured materiel.
  • 17th Ranger Battalion (Bn HQ)
    • Command & coordinate assault companies.

    • Manage detainee staging, initial screening, and transfer to JTF detention.

    • Provide brigade-level logistics coordination with FOB Whiteclaw.
  • 74th SFG
    • Confirm AA emplacement sites and trench dispositions via recon.

    • Maintain continuous screen and QRF posture.

    • Conduct precision direct-action on HVTs and flank interdiction.
  • Echo Company
    • Provide vehicle/logistics lift via air and ground.

    • Deploy Stryker (SHORAD) for local air defense during Phase 1 and Phase 3.

    • Exploit breaches with mechanized elements; transport detainees/materiel to PZ LongStroke/FOB Whiteclaw.
  • Engineers / EOD
    • Lead route and structure clearance; mitigate IEDs during breaches and compound clearance.

    • Render safe or prepare materiel for demolition/documentation in Phase 3.
  • SIGINT / ELINT / UAV ISR
    • Characterize jammer emissions and provide EW reports.

    • Persistent overwatch of maritime approaches, trench belts, and OBJ POKER.

    • Prioritize and transmit fresh targeting data to assault elements.

Logistics - Rearm & Refit (FOB Whiteclaw)

  • Immediate retrograde to FOB Whiteclaw after Phase 1 completion for rearm/refit. Alpha, 17th, Echo coordinate timelines.
  • Engineers/EOD check and replenish demolition charges. Fuel, ammo, vehicle maintenance. Prep for Phase 2 assault.
  • Coordinate helicopter resupply after Phase 2: full infantry/vehicle resupply staged to designated LZs near OBJ POKER.

Rules of Engagement (ROE) - (Tightened/Official)

  • Maximum force authorized to achieve mission objectives and ensure force protection.
  • Positive Identification (PID) of hostile intent/hostile act required when practicable. Once PID is established, units may apply decisive, overwhelming force.
  • Commanders may employ all available organic and allocated fires, direct-action capabilities, demolition, mechanized assault and area denial to accomplish tasks and dominate the battlespace.
  • Force protection and mission success take precedence where necessary; feasible measures to reduce civilian harm must be used but will not override force protection.
  • Detainees: Detain when feasible; neutralize if presenting immediate lethal threat. Preserve chain-of-custody for materiel/detainees when operationally possible.

Intelligence/EW Considerations

  • SIGINT priority: localize jammer emissions (frequency bands, emitter coordinates) and share ELINT to enable safe ISR/SEAD.
  • Expect intermittent GPS/SAT comm degradation — use LOS and prearranged burst windows.
  • HUMINT: exploit detainee debriefs and evacuee reports for compound layouts and HVTs.
  • UAV ISR: persistent overwatch of maritime approaches, trench belts, and OBJ POKER.

Casevac/Medical

  • Forward medical teams at FOB Whiteclaw and PZ LongStroke. Echo Company to provide mechanized CASEVAC where feasible.
  • Aerial CASEVAC constrained by EW and airspace risk — preannounce medevac windows.

Command & Signal

  • Command: WARLORD(ACTING BCO) on-scene. Operational control delegated to on-site Command.
  • Primary Comms: Secure LOS nets; SAT/HF backups for EW-jammed areas. Prearranged burst windows.
  • Report Flow: Immediate HVT / materiel seizure reports to JTF. Detainee movements strictly controlled per SOP.
  • Coordination: Alpha Co coordinates assault; 74th SFG provides screen/QRF; Echo Co manages mechanized support and detainee transport.

Success Criteria

  • Air corridor degraded/denied ≥ 72 hours (CSAT helicopter offloads materially interrupted).
  • Western trench belts breached and cleared; approach lanes secured.
  • OBJ POKER rendered inoperable: major materiel destroyed/seized; distribution disrupted.
  • Military-aged males detained and processed; exploitable materiel documented and transferred for analysis.
  • Maritime supply line effectively disrupted.

Commanders Intent

Cut the sea bridge, destroy OBJ POKER, and remove the materiel and human infrastructure enabling Vympel 322 — use decisive force where required, exploit captures for intelligence, and prioritize mission momentum.
